In the 1790's a group of RI businessmen built the Slater Mill, and Pawtucket
became the birthplace of the American industrial revolution. The City enjoyed a
long, prosperous manufacturing history until the second half of the 20th
century.
Faced with vast numbers of empty mills, Mayor James E. Doyle, with the
assistance of the City Council and the Planning and Redevelopment Agency,
developed a vision and a revitalization plan for Downtown Pawtucket. In 1999 an
Arts and Entertainment District was established to provide tax advantages to
qualifying local artists. In the last 5 years, 850,000 sq. ft. of underused or
vacant mill buildings have been renovated and are being used by hundreds of
artists. Directly across the street from Riverfront Lofts, the historically
significant Pawtucket Armory is being transformed into a performing arts
center. In the fall of 2003, the critically-acclaimed GAMM Theatre opened in
the Armory annex.
Mayor Doyle and the City of Pawtucket have been recognized for these
achievements by many organizations including the RI Historical Preservation
& Heritage Commission, which selected the city for the John H. Chaffee
Public Service Award and the Arts & Business Council of Rhode Island which
presented Mayor Doyle the 2004 Arts Advocate Award.
The leadership and support of the City of Pawtucket and its Planning and
Redevelopment Agency has been a critical to the success of Riverfront Lofts.
